PFAS stands for per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a group of more than 10,000 synthetic chemicals. They are often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they do not easily break down. Their indestructible nature poses risks for our health as well as the environment.
Studies have shown that exposure to PFAS can result in liver damage, thyroid disease, developmental issues, reduced fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression, and cancer. The sad fact is that PFAS chemicals are widely used commercially in products such as nonstick cookware, cleaning products, water-resistant fabrics, shampoo, dental floss, cosmetics, and much more. No. Nomex® fabric does not inherently contain PFAS chemicals. Where PFAS can sometimes come into play is with the finish used on the fabric. Some Nomex® is made with a DWR (Durable with Water Repellency) finish that repels water, stains, and grease. DWR contains bromides which are in the PFAS family. However, not all Nomex® is treated with DWR.

The Nomex® lllA fabric that we use for our products is treated with a “wickable” finish instead of a DWR finish. Our finish doesn’t repel water, but it does draw moisture away from the skin and into the fabric, resulting in quick drying characteristics. Unlike DWR, this finish is PFAS-free. Choosing FILO means choosing PFAS-free Nomex®.
