Where Your Money Goes

It’s difficult for most people to admit they need help, and that’s especially true for first responders. There’s a stigma in the fire service when it comes to talking about mental health. Most first responders suffer in silence but that doesn't need to be your reality. Next Rung is a firefighter founded and operated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to help combat mental health issues among firefighters and first responders. Below are the services Next Rung provides first responders:

Next Rung has a network of first responders across the country who participate in their free peer support line. Peer support gives first responders in need the opportunity to talk about what they’re going through with someone who can relate. Peer counselors are not professional therapists. They stay within their scope and have been trained in the signs that someone needs further help.

When professional counseling is needed, Next Rung will help locate a therapist in the area and even schedule the appointment. If finances are a barrier, Next Rung will cover the cost of the initial appointment and up to five additional appointments. At that point, they will consult with the therapist and potentially cover six additional appointments if needed/recommended.

When we don’t have healthy coping mechanisms to deal with the difficulties we face, we sometimes turn to suicide ideation or alcohol and drugs to numb the pain. In these cases, Next Rung will help connect you with an appropriate treatment facility. If cost is a barrier, they will provide financial assistance.

The 5 Gallon Bucket Analogy

Think of your mental health and what you can handle as a 5 gallon bucket. Every time you have a fight with your partner, a rough day with your kids, an unexpected expense, etc., a little bit of water is poured in. A 5 gallon bucket can hold quite a bit, but it still has a max. In addition to the life stressors everyone faces, us first responders have a unique and unfortunate set of experiences that can cause our buckets to overflow. Things like:

Finding victims in fires.
Devastating calls involving children.
Telling strangers their loved one is gone.
Constantly missing family milestones and holidays due to their schedule.
And sleepless night after sleepless night when they’re on shift.

Everyone needs to empty their bucket before it overflows. Especially first responders. That's where Next Rung comes in.
